Why the right underwear could help you have a baby

Men trying to become fathers are better off wearing loose underwear rather than briefs according to a study published on Thursday

Men who primarily wore boxer shorts had a 25 per cent higher sperm concentration, a 17 per cent higher total sperm count and 33 per cent more swimming sperm in a single ejaculation than people with tighter trousers, the study found.

The study also doesn't prove that tight underwear and a lower sperm count are tightly connected.

"It might be predicted that men who spend much of their day seated and also wear tight underwear would be most likely to suffer a fall in their sperm production due to scrotal heating", Prof Sharpe said.

A researcher at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the study's lead author said in a press release, "These results point to a relatively easy change that men can make when they and their partners are seeking to become pregnant".

The men involved were aged between 18 and 56 who visited Massachusetts General Hospital between 2000 and 2017 as part of couples seeking fertility treatment.

Men's underwear choice can affect their sperm count and quality, according to a new study by Harvard researchers. Each provided semen and blood samples and they were asked about the style of underwear they wore most frequently in the preceding three months.

But if that isn't enough to put men off of wearing them in favour of boxers, this new study just might.

"Beyond providing additional evidence that underwear choices may impact fertility, our study provides evidence, for the first time, that a seemingly random lifestyle choice could have profound impacts on hormone production in men at both the level of the testis and the brain", Jorge Chavarro, senior author of the study and associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology, said in the statement.

Importantly, while those differences were significant, none of the men had clinically low sperm counts - so while wearing looser boxers might be better for your sperm count, going for tighter ones wouldn't necessarily make you infertile.
