In a similar case in January 2014, Berlin supermarket workers discovered 140 kilos (310 pounds) of the drug worth around €6m (£4.4m) also hidden in crates of bananas.

Some 45 boxes of bananas from Ports of America in Freeport were given away to the agency because they were already ripe.

"Once all 45 boxes had been emptied, what was left was quite the cache".

Sergeants found the hidden cocaine after lifting a box that felt different. A sergeant freed the box from a strap and opened it.

The cocaine found in the shipment of bananas. TDCJ said. "Inside that?" Inside, was a white powdery substance.

In all, 540 packages of cocaine were in the banana boxes, with an estimated street value of $17,820,000. They say the street value of the drugs is almost $18 million.
