Suspect shot by police after double stabbing in Amsterdam station

"A suspect has been shot after a stabbing incident at Amsterdam Central Station", police said on Twitter.

A knife attacker stabbed two people at Amsterdam's main rail station on Friday morning before being shot by police, authorities said. A while later he saw another man lying on the ground nearby, he said.

All three people were taken to the hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.

Terrified onlookers were said to have fled in panic when the attack happened.

"The suspect is at a hospital under police guard and is being questioned about his motive for the stabbing incident".

Police spokesman Zuiderhoek said the knifeman's condition was not life-threatening, but that he had been shot in the lower body.

Police closed off two train platforms to passengers, but did not order a complete evacuation of the station.

Police have descended on the terminal, a busy entry and exit point for visitors to the Dutch capital. "There was also a police helicopter circling above".

The two platforms which were cordoned off were reopened for rail traffic two hours later, police said.

Emergency vehicles parked near the scene of a stabbing attack near the central train station in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on August 31, 2018.

But amid a number of scares and reports that people linked to some of those attacks may have crossed briefly into the country, top Dutch security and intelligence officials have stressed that the threat level is substantial.

Around 250,000 people travel through the Central Station every day, according to statistics provided by the Amsterdam.info travel guide.

However, trams to and from the square in front of the premises were stopped as police and other emergency services converged on the area, which was taped off to keep pedestrians away.
