AI chief Fei-Fei Li to scale back role at Google Cloud

Carnegie Mellon’s Andrew Moore to join Google Cloud as new head of AI later this year

Fei-Fei Li will step aside as head of Google Cloud's artificial intelligence group at the end of the year but will continue to serve as an adviser, Google said Tuesday. The respected AI researcher will be modified by Carnegie Mellon College's dean of pc science and dilapidated Google staffer, Andrew Moore.

CEO of Google Cloud, Diane Greene, said that Li's team has "innovated and done a remarkable job of accelerating the adoption of AI and ML [machine learning] by developers and Google Cloud customers".

Greene added that the transition has been planned for some time, as Li had always meant to return to her job at Stanford.

Though Li's departure was scheduled, it doesn't change the fact that there's been a lot of turnover at Google's cloud division in recent months.

Moore previously worked at Google between 2006 and 2014. Li taught for more than 9 years at the university and is on her fourth year as director of the Stanford AI Lab; she took a leave of absence at the start of 2017 to head the Google unit. Printed excerpts from the emails included these comments attributed to Li: "This is red meat to the media to find all ways to damage Google".

Google AI's China center was led by Fei-Fei Li and Jia Li, former head of Research at Snapchat who later joined Google as Head of research and development of Google Cloud and is presently the head of their China Center.

Later, Google drafted a set of values for its AI effort, promising not to work on weapons, or using AI to weaponise anything.

Google hired Li in 2016, although the China-born scientist continued in her AI role at Stanford.

In March, six months after the Project Maven deal was signed, Li penned an op-ed for The New York Times titled, How to Make AI That's Good for People.
