Trump, at the United Nations in NY , declared that Kavanaugh is "outstanding", and added, "I am with him all the way". Republicans, who hold a paper-thin majority in the Senate, can ill afford defections if Kavanaugh is to be approved.

According to IMDb, his last role, in a western movie called The Price of Death, is now in post-production.

He began acting following a career in the US Marines, serving in Vietnam and receiving two purple hearts, before becoming the first black soldier in the 1st Marine Division to be promoted to sergeant.

He once talked about his time portraying a Marine in Alien, saying he taught the other actors on set how to act like one. "He said he had no idea I was that good; had he known, my part would have been bigger", he said at the time.

"All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for?" Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the Corps. Every meal's a banquet. "I LOVE the Corps!"

Away from acting Al also enjoyed chart success - reaching number 16 in the United Kingdom charts in 1975 with the track Fool, as well as being a member of the band Hawkwind.

Fans of Grange Hill might also remember Matthews from that show, which saw him appear in several episodes as Mr Green, the dad of character Benny Green (played by the late Terry Sue-Patt).
