The mobile-friendly Hindi version of Amazon.in is rolling out for the Android app, and also the mobile website, with iPhone users likely to get it in the coming months.

"Of the 400-odd million Internet users in India, more than 100 Mn Internet users prefer to shop in Hindi, interact with Hindi language websites".

No other Indian e-commerce companies such as Flipkart, Snapdeal, and others have a local language version of their website or application.

Officials said Amazon doesn't have its entire portfolio of products in Hindi as yet and that the company is starting off with the most common items for its Hindi website.

He added, "The upcoming festival season is a great time for new customers to come online to fulfill their shopping needs - now for the first time customers can do their Diwali shopping in Hindi!"

While announcing the launch, Manish Tiwary, vice president (category management) at Amazon India said, "My mother keeps saying why we can not shop in Hindi". This will also help it take on Google, which has been making a host of language-based products under its "Next Billion Users" initiative. The country's e-commerce market is tipped to grow to $200 billion in a decade, according to Morgan Stanley.

According to a report in NY times, Amazon's research found that 8 out of 10 Indian customers would prefer to shop in a language other than English and the company believes that the next 100 million customers will have to be in the vernacular language.

Amazon plans to bring more languages to its website in the near future.

Paytm, a digital payments company that operates the No. 3 online retailer, Paytm Mall, began allowing customers to make purchases in 10 Indian languages in October.

According to Thota, Amazon India has an internal team called "Reach", which is working on how to tap the next million users. It maintains that a lot of intelligence went into translation. However, Flipkart is available only in English. Amazon decided that some words and phrases, like "free", "jeans" and "cash on delivery" should be kept in English but written using Hindi's Devanagari script. Flipkart, along with its fashion units Myntra and Jabong, is slightly ahead of Amazon in India's online retail, according to Forrester estimates. But, its plans are more detailed.
