Egypt said archaeologists have discovered a statue of a lion's body and a human head in the southern city of Aswan.

Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa al-Waziri announced Sunday that the statue was found on the southeastern side of Kom Ombo Temple and likely dates back to the Ptolemaic period.

The previously discovered reliefs of King Ptolemy V were engraved in sandstone and inscribed with hieroglyphic and demotic writings, and upon their discovery, were transferred to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat for conservation and display inside the museum.

One of the tablets was dome-shaped and topped with a sun disk with the image of Ptolemy XII and his wife Cleopatra V and their daughters. The piece contains 29 lines of hieroglyphic writing. The two ancient pieces date back to the Ptolemaic era.

The Antiquities Ministry said in early September that the Neolithic site was discovered in Tell el-Samara, about 140 kilometers (87 miles) north of Cairo.

The Ptolemaic dynasty ruled Egypt for about 300 years - from about 320BC until the Roman conquest in 30BC. Egyptians are very eager to completethe conversion and to restore the city's previous solid position among global touristic hotspots worldwide.
