The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is the world's largest automotive group, collectively responsible for 10.6 million vehicle sales previous year.

Under a deal with web giant Google, the Renault-led group - the world's largest auto alliance by sales volume - will begin incorporating the most widespread operating system into its vehicle dashboards starting from 2021.

While the announcement about Google becoming a part of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi has been made jointly by the alliance, each will be working on their own customer interface and specific features to use on top of the Android platform.

"We are building powerful connected and seamless on-board/off-board experiences into our vehicles in addition to the features of Google applications and services that many users are accustomed to, including Google Maps, the Google Assistant and the Google Play Store". It'll also be "compatible with devices running other operating systems, such as Apple iOS", the automakers say, though it's unclear at this stage whether that includes Apple CarPlay support.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, one of the world's top-selling automakers, has made a decision to go with Google's Android operating system to run its dashboard. The ability to use Google Maps and operate climate control and more with your voice using Google Assistant definitely will provide an edge over other auto makers.

Renault SA and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. alliance said Tuesday it has teamed up with Google to offer advanced information services from 2021 using the United States tech giant's operating system.

Meanwhile, access to the Google Play Store will allow the system to be upgraded with third-party apps.
