The Tesla on the other hand has been known to see its performance tail off as its battery drains, with one test seeing its 0-60 time rise by over 50 per cent as its power reserves depleted. "Rapide E will also serve as a critical step on our path to re-launching Lagonda as the world's first zero-emission luxury marque". "Our offer will have very credible acceleration - equal to a petrol Aston Martin - but you'll be able to drive the auto rapidly all the way around the Nurburgring without it derating or conking out on you".

Rapide E will be built at the upcoming St. Athan production facility and customer deliveries are set for Q4 2019. We're told deliveries will take place towards the tail end of next year, and there's no price yet.

Working with Williams Advanced Engineering, Aston Martin says it has been able to "overcome technical challenges" associated with packaging the electric motors and the battery system in the space available. Why so few? The company says this auto will be something of a rolling test bed, with customers providing feedback that will "help shape and improve future Aston Martin EVs".

Okay, what are the EV's tech specs?

When it comes to charging, an 800v outlet will allow the Rapide E to fully recharge in around 45 minutes.

Rapide E will be powered by an 800V battery electrical architecture with 65kWh installed capacity using over 5600 lithium ion 18650 format cylindrical cells.

To achieve this, careful attention was paid to tuning the electric powertrain and the chassis and the motors will drive through Limited Slip Differentia and have revised spring and damper rates which should improve its handling.

As such it's the most powerful Rapide ever. This may still seem familiar to enthusiasts who've driven the V12-powered Rapide S, though.

The batteries will be supplied by Hyperbat Limited, a new joint venture between WAE and the Unipart Manufacturing group.

But how fast is the Rapide E? A Ludicrous Plus equipped P100d develops 610hp and 713lb ft for a 0-60mph time of 2.4 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.

Engineers are already working on software to imitate the response of a 12-cylinder lump, and combined with the aforementioned suspension tweaks, this auto should still feel relatively like a traditional Aston.

And the Rapide E's electric range?

What You Need to Know: Aston Martin's range estimate of "over 200 miles" and the Rapide E's relatively small battery compared to some of its competitors could be the company's way of keeping its cards close to its chest.

The auto was engineered to maintain full power through a hot lap of the 12.8-mile Nurburgring test track in Germany, Aston Martin says it can maintain this level of performance on the street in more than short bursts.
