"I'm sorry it didn't work out, but this is life, and this is O.K. America's going to be O.K. Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman, and I will tell you that MA will be well served", Capuano said, according to The New York Times.

Ayanna Pressley is set to become the first African-American woman elected to the US Congress in MA, following a primary upset.

"This is not just about resisting and affronting Trump", Pressley said, per the Times.

The Chicago-raised activist faces no Republican rival for the district, leaving her free to focus on President Donald Trump. She argued that she was more attuned to the needs of the state's only congressional district where a majority of residents are not white. John Kerry and Rep.

"This is our opportunity to build it", she said. "We are at a crossroads". This can be our darkest hour or it can be our finest. "She will serve the district well in Congress". But her rise reflects seismic changes sweeping the party nationwide heading into November's elections, as candidates who mirror the party's dominant city-dwelling base outperform incumbents - a shift that some fear could deepen splits in the party. During the campaign Pressley had drawn comparisons to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who ousted 10-term New York Rep. Joe Crowley in a Democratic primary in June.

"We won? we won?" she repeats as she looks around the room.

Pressley's victory is indicative of the the broader success of female Democrats this election cycle. She continued in her speech: For the families and victims of senseless gun violence, change can't wait. I don't blame them. I'm just as upset as they are, but so be it.

Schumer, New York Democrat, welcomed their resistance on Twitter. "Let's jump into this pit together", Durbin said. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn), and others expressed their support for Booker.

"This was old-fashioned retail politics", he said, referring to the style of campaigning in which a candidate will attend local events and go door-to-door to garner support.

She was endorsed by fellow congressional upstart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who knocked off veteran Rep. Joe Crowley of NY in June.

Before Ayanna Pressley celebrated her triumph surrounded by dozens of supporters, a wave of shock hit her behind closed doors.

Another major upset of a Democratic congressman took place in MA on Tuesday night.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Democrat, cheered the outcome on Twitter on Tuesday night.

Secretary of state Bill Galvin - Massachusetts' longest-serving statewide official, in office since 1995 - fended off a Democratic primary challenge from Boston city councilor Josh Zakim, who conceded. Pressley will also be the first person of color to ever represent the state in Congress. Robert F. Kennedy, delivered the Democratic response to Trump's State of the Union address this year. In Massachusetts, serious primary challenges are uncommon and often there is a political pecking order for seats that do come open. That race remained too close to call Wednesday.

Capuano was endorsed by prominent MA figures, including former Gov. Deval Patrick, the state's first black governor.
