The Progressive Change Campaign Committee, a political action committee, decried the "use of Trump-like racist comments" as "despicable" _ and also said it was sending out a fundraising email to 1 million supporters nationwide in an attempt to raise money off the comment.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Report, Leon County did see a spike in murders in 2017 reaching a record high of 22, but nearly every other number was lower. Gillum also starts with a large percentage of Republican voters, 37 percent, who say they have no opinion of him yet. Gillum did not directly answer that they were, but insinuated it.

Trump on Twitter said that not only did DeSantis win but that "his opponent in November is his biggest dream". "An entity that has not been tarnished in the same way as ICE has", Gillum responded. Gillum in his remarks to supporters on election night said he and supporters would seek to counter the "dark days that we've been under coming out of Washington".

Gillum has 84 percent of the vote of black voters and 61 percent of Hisapanic voters, while DeSantis hs 54 percent of the white voters. Gillum won the Democratic nomination in an upset.
