The American Library Association keeps track of the books that are targeted and compiles the list at the end of the year.

Thirty-seven years after the first observance of Banned Books Week there are still attempts to remove books from public library shelves.

In one case, the Plymouth-Canton school district in MI considered banning both Toni Morrison's Beloved and Graham Swift's Waterland after complaints from some parents of objectionable content. But, unfortunately, even with the help of outspoken supporters, books are still being removed.

Forever by Judy Blume was one of more than 70 titles a Fayetteville, Arkansas, mother requested be removed in 2012.

This example of banned books is now on display at Highland County District Library in Hillsboro.

"The event is being done to draw attention to the right to read", Stephanie Murphy, Elkins-Randolph County Public Library director, said in a press release. Commemorate these literary heroes during the American Library Association's nationally recognized Banned Books Week (September 23-29) at the University of Toledo's 21st annual Banned Books Week Vigil.

Between 1950 and 1990, 26 000 books were banned under the apartheid regime's Publications Act of 1974.

The CW reveals Arrowverse crossover title is 'Elseworlds'
We now have a name to put to the Arrowverse's 2018 crossover event, which will unfold across three nights and shows this December. The Arrow , Flash and Supergirl event will be titled " Elseworlds ", as the network announced on Wednesday.

The theme for this year's global Banned Books Week event, "Banning Books Silences Stories", is aimed at raising awareness of the need to speak out against the rising tide of censorship.

"There's tons of books that have been challenged over the years whether more recently or over the span of a few decades". The full day event will include a series of presentations, door prizes and banned book giveaways every half hour, and a talk at noon by Charlene Gilbert, Dean of UT's College of Arts and Letters and Dr. Linda Smith. The Read-Out features members of the campus community - faculty, staff and students - reading from some of their favorite banned and challenged books. "We encourage our patrons to get uncomfortable, and challenge themselves instead". American libraries are the cornerstones of our democracy. Our library exists to provide access to information on all subjects and points of view to all people who live in our geographic area that we serve. There will be a week-long a scavenger hunt for library goers. This YA novel was challenged and banned in multiple school districts because it discusses suicide. According to James LaRue, director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom, the number of challenges reflects only incidents reported, and for each one reported, four or five remain unreported.

The Gutekunst Public Library in State Center is also recognizing Banned Books Week.

"The apartheid government used the power of these Acts to censor movies, plays, books and other creative work that challenged the notions of white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant supremacy in a heteronormative world", said Crowster. Some will say, they are just words on a page, what's the big deal. "These are the books that give young readers the ability to safely explore the sometimes scary real world and allow them the freedom to read books that are relevant for them, and to be able to make their own reading choices".

For many years, old and new books alike for various reasons have been challenged by parents who think the content is unsuitable for children.

She said that the main role of the Music Library during this event is to expand the idea of "banned books" into "banned ideas" or "banned communication". It is endorsed by the Library of Congress Center for the Book.
