News Greece Aitoliko beach in Greece covered in spider web

A 300-metre-long spider web that has covered the beach in Aitoliko, Greece has been making rounds on the internet, having covered everything from vegetation to the surface of the water.

The white blanket sprung up in Aitoliko, a city in western Greece.

Giannis Giannakopoulos posted this video of the spider web to YouTube.

The freaky sight was the work of spiders from the genus Tetragnatha - otherwise known as stretch spiders due to their elongated bodies.

Locals said the sudden rise in spiders had come with the arrival of mosquitoes in the town. According to the scientists, however, the Tetragnatha spiders are usually building such large webs for mating purposes, and this phenomenon is occurring seasonally.

DC jogger stabbed to death in apparent 'random' attack, police say
It is offering up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest. "Everything you hope that a daughter and a friend could be". The description is based on a grainy surveillance video from the Chinese restaurant's security camera.

While the giant spider-web in Aitoliko, Greece, might look freaky, the phenomenon is not at all harmful for humans, animals in the region, or the local flora.

It was likely that abundant food, high temperature and sufficient humidity had provided the ideal conditions for a large number of the spiders to come together to mate.

In the interview, Democritus University of Thrace assistant professor Maria Chatzaki said: "The spiders will have their party and die soon".

Fortunately, the spiders shouldn't cause any permanent damage to the area's plants.

They are known to build webs near watery habitats such as the lagoon - creating mating dens.
