Abhilash Tomy (39) is a Commander with Indian Navy and is now competing in the 2018 Golden Globe Race which involves a gruelling 30,000-mile solo circumnavigation of the globe.

It could take days for rescuers to reach a solo Indian yachtsman who is said to be severely injured in remote waters more than 3000 kilometres west of Perth.

According to a report issued from the Les Sables d'Olonne, France Friday night, the 70 knot winds and 14 metre high seas have left the yachts of Indian Navy's Tomy and Ireland's Gregor McGuckin dismasted, and have twice knocked down the yacht of second-placed Dutchman Mark Slats.

Race organisers are working closely with the Australian Rescue Co-ordination Center in Canberra to reach the Indian naval officer. Several other yachts were also damaged.

In particular Estonian skipper Uku Randmaa is within range, some 450 miles to the west of Thuriya.

Indian Navy Saturday said all efforts were being made to rescue its officer Abhilash Tomy, who has been injured after his vessel was hit by a vicious storm mid-way across the south Indian Ocean while taking part in the Golden Globe Race.

Freeland and Lighthizer are due in NY next week for the United Nations General Assembly, but it was unclear if they would meet. Canada, a close military ally and the top buyer of US goods, has said the national security justification is "absurd".

In 2013, Commander Abhilash Tomy of the Indian Navy became the first Indian to have circumnavigated the globe.

Race organisers say the 39-year-old hasn't been heard from since he sent a text message overnight, saying: "ROLLED".

'We are very grateful to all these worldwide organisations for mobilising their resources so quickly and for the lead role taken by MRCC in Canberra'.

His yacht was caught in extremely rough weather.

"The only link is the tracking signal we are receiving from the yacht, but the batteries have a limited life".

Naval Officer Abhilash Tomy is the first Indian to complete the hard challenge of a solo, unassisted, non-stop circumnavigation under sail. He was on the third position, out of the 18 global participants, and has sailed over 10,500 nautical miles in the last 84 days, since the commencement of the race on July 1, 2018. Indian Navy is doing their best as they always have.
