National Social Liberal Party presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro flashes thumbs up at passersby in Brasilia's Ceilandia neighborhood Brazil Wednesday Sept. 5 2018. Brazilians go to the polls on October 7 to cast their vote for a new president

His nearest rival, far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro, has 19 per cent.

"He lost a lot of blood, arrived at the hospital ... nearly dead".

Police spokesman Flavio Santiago told the AP that Bolsonaro's attacker was arrested shortly after the stabbing.

"He underwent surgery, which was successful and he is doing OK", Mourao said.

Bolsonaro made a campaign stop in the Brazilian south-eastern city of Jiuz de Fora, his son, Flavio, said in a Twitter post, adding that his father was "stabbed in the abdomen" while attending the campaign event.

Corruption investigations have resulted in the jailing of scores of powerful businessmen and politicians, and alienated infuriated voters.

Bolsonaro, a retired Army captain, is running as the law-and-order candidate and positioned himself as the anti-politician despite having spent almost three decades in Congress where he has managed to author just few laws.

Mueller OK with some written responses from Trump
Jay Sekulow, counsel to the president, said: "We continue to maintain an ongoing dialogue with the Office of Special Counsel". That includes whether the president obstructed justice in his attempts to undermine the Russian Federation investigation.

Environmentalist candidate Marina Silva said the attack must be investigated and the perpetrators punished.

Statements about women, minorities and LGBT people have repelled some Brazilians, but attracted many others.

Mr Bolsonaro faces trial before the Supreme Court for speech that prosecutors said incited hate and rape.

Bolsonaro screamed in pain after being stabbed in his abdomen, then fell backward into the arms of those around him. He has called the charges politically motivated.

It took a few moments for the crowd to realise what happened, but they quickly rushed the candidate out of the street.

Like Trump, Bolsonaro portrayed himself as a pro-gun anti-establishment candidate, who seeks to "drain the swamp" of the Brazilian elite, which has sunk in corruption. Some Brazilian media also reported that Bolsonaro repeatedly spoke favorably of Trump and even liked to compare himself to the United States president. "I repudiate violence as a political language, express solidarity with my opponent, and demand that authorities identify and punish those responsible for this barbarism", Democratic Labor Party (PDT) candidate Ciro Gomes wrote on Twitter.

Brazil's stocks.BVSP and currency BRBY extended gains after the stabbing as traders bet the incident could boost support for Bolsonaro, who has tapped a University of Chicago-trained banker as his main economic adviser.
