President Donald Trump is insisting he has evidence that China is attempting to meddle in the USA midterm elections.

President Trump took aim at China and Iran while chairing a U.N. Security Council meeting on nonproliferation on Wednesday - accusing China of meddling in the USA midterms, and promising sanctions "tougher than ever before" on Iran.

"They don't want me or us to win because I am the first president to ever challenge China on trade", Mr Trump said on Wednesday.

What's the endgame in the US-China trade war?

But after a turbulent week of sanctions, tariffs cancelled meetings and accusations of election meddling, Trump suggested the honeymoon was over as US-China relations sink to their lowest point in years. But Trump's comments Wednesday seem to confirm that China is actively interfering now.

Trump's address to the General Assembly on Tuesday criticized what he called the "ideology of globalism" while heaping praise on his own administration's achievements.

President Trump imposed tariffs on $200bn worth of Chinese goods on Monday, with Beijing accusing Washington of "economic intimidation". The official added that more information would be declassified in coming days and that Vice President Mike Pence was expected to speak on the issue next week.

The editorial went on to say that his position on trade with China is something that could hurt the president's party in the upcoming mid-term elections and his aspirations for re-election in 2020. Tough sanctions are due to kick in against Tehran in November, and Trump warned that there would be "severe consequences" for any country that defied them. But with the elections less than two months away, USA intelligence and election-protection officials have not cited any specific, credible Chinese efforts.

Trump tweeted last month that "all of the fools so focused" on meddling from Russian Federation should "start also looking in another direction, China".

Washington has unleashed the barrage of punitive tariffs as it accuses Beijing of overseeing the forced transfer of USA technology in exchange for market access, cybertheft with national security implications, and using other barriers that disadvantage U.S. firms.

This prompted Ford to scrap a plan to sell the Chinese-made Focus Active crossover model in the U.S. and Volvo to shift the production of the XC60 from China to Sweden.

Gruenwald's comments, made at an event hosted by S&P Global at its NY headquarters, came a few days after the Trump administration implemented 10 per cent tariffs on US$200 billion of Chinese imports, which could rise to 25 per cent in the new year. "They also know that I am the one that knows how to stop it", Mr Trump tweeted on 18 September.

In his remarks before the council, Trump made no mention of Russia's role in trying to tilt the 2016 election in his favor and its ongoing efforts to interfere in this year's midterm elections.

Trump has called Xi a "good friend" since their first meeting at his Florida resort in April 2017.

Also this week, US B-52 bombers flew over the disputed South China Sea and East China Sea and Beijing slammed USA plans to sell military parts to self-governing Taiwan.

Some noted their surprise and disagreement with a decision by the China Daily to place advertisements in newspapers in the Des Moines Register and other papers.
