Colorado River boat crash

Colorado River boat crash

The recreational boats crashed in Moabi Regional Park as darkness was falling on a rushing river crowded with holiday weekend boaters, making the rescue operation hard, the San Bernardino County Fire District said.

The smash happened in Moabi Regional Park, a popular water recreation area situated about 290 miles east of Los Angeles.

Six people had minor injuries and six others suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Some people were found as much as a mile down river due to the rapidly moving water.

At least 12 patients were treated, including one with life-threatening injuries who was airlifted to a Las Vegas-area trauma center.

At about 8:03 pm, San Bernardino County Fire was requested to respond to a boating collision in the waters of the Colorado River in Park Moabi.

Two people are missing and "presumed submerged", according to the tweet.

The crash was so violent that one of the boats sank and the other sustained major damage, fire officials said.

Mr Sherwin said: "We had victims of this collision that were located three to five miles downstream from the original point of impact". The search for them has been postponed because of darkness.

The Labor Day weekend revelers were enjoying the water at Pirate Cove Marina when the boats collided in a stretch of the Colorado River marking the California border on Saturday around 8pm.

After the shocking collision other recreational boats nearby converged on the scene and downstream to help rescue victims, according to Sherwin.
