Crossrail opening delayed until autumn 2019

Crossrail to miss December opening date

Crossrail to miss December opening date

In a statement, the company said the revised schedule is necessary to "ensure a safe and reliable railway for customers from day one of passenger service".

Elizabeth Line services through central London have been delayed by at least nine months as Crossrail pencils in extra time to complete final infrastructure and carry out extensive testing.

Crossrail, due to launch in December 2018, will not open until autumn 2019, it has been announced.

Once it does open, commuters in Abbey Wood will be able to get to Liverpool Street Station in just 17 minutes.

Crossrail Limited described the 10-year project as "hugely complex", stating that the original timetable for testing has been reduced by contractors needing more time to complete work in the central tunnels and develop software.

Crossrail will stretch 73 miles from Reading and Heathrow airport in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, traversing London via a 13-mile twin-bore tunnel connected to the Underground.

"When complete, the Elizabeth line will transform travel across London and the South East, with new state-of-the-art trains taking millions of people more quickly across London, providing a boost to the economy worth billions of pounds".

The Elizabeth line is one of the most complex and challenging infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the United Kingdom and is now in its final stages.
