The Manchester United boss recently stated Young Boys hold a "huge advantage" due to their experience on the surface.

A number of United's players were seen raising their eyebrows when stepping out for training on the plastic pitch, with the added impact meaning United captain Antonio Valencia did not travel for the Group H opener.

"Everybody knows it is different but I have to say I said last week in Geneva, in a Uefa meeting that we had, what can I say".

"We are in Switzerland, they have the best tennis player and I'm pretty sure the big man is not happy on certain surfaces, he has a favourite surface but he has to play". Apart from that, we go with everything we have and have to try and win'.

United boss Jose Mourinho did not take kindly to comments made by Carragher last week when suggesting that the England global will not get the minutes he craves if he stays at Old Trafford. Everyone knows he has a favourite surface, but he has to win on the surfaces he is not in love with.

In Valencia's absence - the full-back's knee injury precludes him from playing on the artificial surface - Diogo Dalot, the 19-year-old signed from Porto in the summer, may make his United debut.

Ahead of the European clash, Mourinho has urged his players to follow Roger Federer's example and prove they can win even when they aren't playing on grass. "Of course he has".

"Even if I just gave him two passes, he would score two goals and that's why he's one of the greatest footballers who's ever lived".

"We decided not to bring Valencia because his knee is not a knee that needs an artificial pitch at all", Mourinho told reporters in the Swiss capital on Tuesday.

"We have Diogo Dalot, Ashley Young and Darmian ready to play too".

It has been a troubled start to the season, but United come into this game on the back of successive Premier League wins over Burnley and Watford.

"This clearly reflects that the goal is not to speak the truth, but to destabilise a group that works as you have seen today".

Mourinho said of the Young Boys match: "He's selected for the game".

"We have Lukaku, Rashford, Mata, Alexis, Martial - they can't all play together".

"We are creating a lot of chances, we also find a way to protect ourselves in some specific situations, we managed to get the six points after two defeats which was very important, so I am happy".
