Golden State Warriors forward David West announced his retirement on Thursday, one day after celebrating his 38th birthday.

"I am humbled and thankful for the support of my family, friends, coaches and fans throughout this experience".

The signings of DeMarcus Cousins and Jonas Jerebko this summer left little room for West in an increasingly crowded big-man rotation, so the writing was on the wall for this announcement early last month. Then he became a key piece in the strong Indiana Pacer teams led by Paul George between 2011-2015, before settling for the league minimum to close his career with National Basketball Association title-hopefuls such as San Antonio and Golden State.

West averaged 13.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists as game over his career. Spending four years at Xavier, West won three straight A-10 Player of the Year awards from 2001 to 2003. He was drafted in 2003 by the New Orleans Hornets with the No. 18 pick in the NBA Draft.

While his time with Golden State was the least productive period of his, West wasn't simply ring chasing and proved valuable when called upon, averaging 17.8 points per 36 minutes in his final season with the Warriors, according to Basketball Reference. A 21-points-per-game performer in his prime, West became an invaluable role player on a championship team.

"There should be a picture in the dictionary of David under 'pro's pro,"' Warriors general manager Bob Myers said. "We are all better for having spent the past two years with him".

"He is a true champion in every sense of the word".

"I don't look at this as this is it for me, and, I think for a lot of people, that's their mindset. There is no doubt the best is ahead for him".
