The US Geological Survey has reported a magnitude 8.1 quake has hit Suva, in the south-east of Fiji.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said no destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was expected.

Civil Defence confirmed there was no tsunami threat to New Zealand.
