Mr Trump will be following in the footsteps of past United States presidents when he visits Ireland.

Two weeks ago, Trump announced his intention to attend the 100th anniversary of the World War I armistice on November 11 in France after abruptly canceling his proposed military parade in Washington on Veterans Day because of exorbitant cost projections.

The president's foreign trips - he also will visit Ireland and Colombia - will take place shortly after the midterm elections and could come at a time of political tumult if Democrats succeed in winning control of at least part of Congress.

"While in Europe, the President will also visit Ireland to renew the deep and historic ties between our two nations", the White House said in a statement.

"Our two countries have such strong historic, economic, cultural and family ties".

Mr Trump, however, will embark on other overseas trips in November. "Maintaining those connections is always a top priority", Mr Coveney said.

One of Egg's relatives called the police on August 7 to report Egg missing, prompting the investigation into his whereabouts. An acquaintance of Egg's confronted one of the men but was told Egg was "on a trip to Europe", according to the paper.

On social media, Irish people reacted to the news with a mixture of despair, amusing memes and plans for the "largest protest Ireland has ever seen".

He said in the Oval Office in March when he was visited by Mr Varadkar: 'I look forward to being there.

It is the first time Trump has visited Ireland since he entered the White House at the start of 2017. I love it, I love it.

Mr Trump talked about his relationship with Mr Varadkar, the Irish leader, when the pair together commemorated St Patrick's Day last March in Washington DC.

Rather than arriving in Air Force One, he touched down at Shannon airport in his own private plane in May 2014 - with officials rolling out a red carpet to greet him.
