Ecuador tried giving Assange diplomatic post in Russian Federation

People close to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange held private meetings with Russian officials a year ago to discuss a potential plan to help Assange escape the Ecuadorian embassy in London and flee to another country, The Guardian reported Friday.

In 2012, Assange sought refuge in London's Ecuadorian Embassy to escape extradition to Sweden, which had issued a warrant for his arrest on sexual harassment and rape charges.

The incident was revealed in a letter by Ecuador's foreign ministry to a legislator who had asked for information about Ecuador's decision past year to grant Assange citizenship.

The details of a bold plot to smuggle Wikileaks founder Julian Assange out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London have leaked.

The "special designation" status awarded by the Ecuadorian president would allow Assange to hold diplomatic posts overseas even if the whistleblower is not career diplomat.

Documents reveal that Lenin Moreno, President of Ecuador, may have contacted Moscow about helping him get Assange out of Britain.

Ecuador abandoned its decision shortly after, according to the letter.

One ultimate destination, multiple sources have said, was Russian Federation, where Assange would not be at risk of extradition to the US. "It is worth noting that attempts to picture Ecuadorian diplomats' meetings at the Russian embassy in the light of conspiracy theories do not stand up to criticism", the ministry stressed.

While the contents of the letter have yet to be verified, Moscow had previously ridiculed sensationalist reports by United Kingdom tabloids exposing a "secret Russian plan" to extract Assange from his London confinement.

The Ecuadorian President has said Mr Assange can not remain in asylum for life.

He stated he did not come into possession of the emails from Russian Federation, but did not deny they could have been handed to him by a third party.

Assange has been in the embassy for six years.

It was not immediately evident if Ecuadorean officials had any contact with Russian Federation as part of the Assange appointment.

The letter from Ecuador's foreign ministry was a summary of 28 documents that were sent to Vintimilla in response to her request.

Assange appeared to be readying for his new job title, and had even written a letter on December 4 renouncing his request for political asylum from Ecuador in order to become a diplomat. The letter, which was seen by Reuters, said he ultimately planned to travel to Ecuador.
