Eternals: Marvel Names Director For Its Next Cosmic Franchise

The Eternals Chloe Zhao

One of those possibilities is The Eternals, a group of immortal ancient aliens offshoots created by Jack Kirby. Their comic book arcs ranged from trippy to downright weird, which makes it hard to imagine them smoothly transitioning to the big screen.

The Eternals will be part of Marvel Studios' Phase 4 - the phase set to unfold after the release of next year's as-yet Avengers 4, also set to include Spider-Man: Far From Home and - presuming the studio can find a director willing to take on the job - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Zhao will be only the second woman to direct a Marvel Studios film by herself.

Zhao, the director of the acclaimed indie Western film The Rider, was initially on the short list to direct Marvel's Black Widow movie, which ultimately went to Cate Shortland.

Rod Rosenstein denies he proposed secretly recording Donald Trump
One of the career civil servants was Scott Schools, who would later go on to sign off on the firing of McCabe, the official said. Wallace said he views the statement from Rosenstein as "very weak", and written in a "lawyerly" fashion.

The Eternals will kick up the unusual factor in the MCU a few notches, past even the trippy visuals of Doctor odd, the wackiness of Thor: Ragnarok, and the absurdity of Guardians of the Galaxy.

In the comics, the Celestials performed similar experiments on the homeworlds of alien races like the Kree and the shapeshifting Skrulls. Perhaps that element of Thanos' heritage will be retained. However, the script will reportedly focus on the love story between the cosmically powered Ikaris and Sersi, an Eternal who lives among humans.

Marvel has hired their latest director, and as promised by Kevin Feige, diversity is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's collection of directors. That tease was followed a month later by the news that Matthew and Ryan Firpo (Ruin) had been tapped by the studio to write a script for the project. Many of these characters are largely unknown to the general public, so there isn't necessarily a preconceived expectations for them outside of the two leads.

Honestly, a blockbuster gig is further away from The Rider than from the work of any other director who's been put in this position, but Zhao's such a strong talent that I can't wait to see what she does with a budget.
