Europe makes strong start to day two at Ryder Cup

Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau held out for a 1up victory over Justin Rose and Jon Rahm - who were two up with six holes remaining - while Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler were utterly dominated in a 4&2 victory over a poor Rory McIlroy and Thorbjørn Olesen.

Thomas, paired with Jordan Spieth for the day two opener, found himself carrying Team USA's sole hopes of a morning win after Garcia/McIlroy beat Koepka/Finau, Molinari/Fleetwood beat Reed/Woods and Casey/Hatton beat Johnson/Fowler.

The hosts looked set to have plenty of work to do in the afternoon, having lost the first three matches to finish.

But Bjorn, the European captain, sent McIlroy right back out to the course at Le Golf National to play an afternoon match alongside Ian Poulter, and they came back from a 2-down deficit to defeat Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson, 4 & 2.

The Europeans have now won eight of the last nine matches at this Ryder Cup after trailing 3-0.

The first two days of Ryder Cup action will include split sessions with separate types of golf being played.

Former Masters champion Garcia has won 23.5 points since making his Ryder Cup debut as a teenager in 1999, and needs just two more to pass all-time record-holder Nick Faldo's mark of 25, but he was quick to praise Noren's performance in his first Ryder Cup match.

What else can you do with a notoriously wild player on a course like Le Golf National, where water and thick, pernicious rough loom on almost every shot? It is the only match the Americans are leading. The ball smacked off a wood slat framing the green, went high in the air and as the gallery gasped, the ball came down 3 feet from the hole.

Pascuzzi didn't win - he came in second, behind returning champion Evelyn Rubin - but he said it himself, he's still a victor . But he arranged an unforgettable moment with help from contestant coordinator Corina Nusu.

Europe whitewashed the United States in foursomes for the first time in Ryder Cup history to turn the 42nd biennial contest on its head in Paris.

Finau: "I said, 'Get lucky [on the 16th],' and fortunately I did".

The US came into this Ryder Cup as holders and favourites.

Reed and Woods never looked like they had any real chance to get back in this match, and it mercifully ended at the par-4 15th after Reed found the water.

Europe roared back at the Americans to the delight of raucous crowds at the first Ryder Cup to be played in France. For example, if Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy are going against Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas, and Rose makes a birdie on the first hole but the rest of the players make a par, Europe gets a 3, the US gets a 4 and Europe goes 1 up. Finau's favorable bounce off a wooden bulkhead led to a tying birdie from 4 feet. He couldn't, and Europe earned the first point of the morning session.

Soon to follow were Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren.

Coming to the 15th the lead was still a fragile one, and when Poulter produced a fabulous tee-shot and birdie putt on 16, Thomas had to hole a nail-biter to prevent it going all square once again.

No pairing has ever lost a match after being four up through 13, and Garcia was not about to let it happen now.
