The puppies were reportedly carrying Campylobacter, which causes diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever.

In total, 105 infected individuals reported dog exposure, including 101 who had contact with a pet store puppy.

So far, none of the infections have been deadly.

Of those infected, 29 were employees at a pet store - and 99 percent of those infected reported being exposed to a dog, the CDC says. People in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming were included in the report.

Most patients will recover from a Campylobacter infection within five days without treatment, though drinking extra fluids is recommended.

"This outbreak demonstrates that puppies can be a source of multidrug-resistant Campylobacter infections in humans, warranting a closer look at antimicrobial use in the commercial dog industry", the report stated. This is believed to have been a form of "overtreatment", not an uncommon occurrence among animal breeders, which likely contributed to the strains developing drug resistance. Those with compromised immune systems can be severely afflicted and complications can lead to paralysis or even death. But the analysis of medical records of 150 animals showed that all of them were treated with antibiotics at least once and half had received them for prophylaxis, although the puppies have not had anything.

He said that more than 10 ships sailed past him as he headed towards the remote Pacific island, but failed to notice him. Adilang is the youngest of four siblings and arrived back home on 8 September, in good health despite his ordeal.

As noted by CNN, the CDC had earlier revealed that the national pet store chain Petland was a source of a drug-resistant outbreak of Campylobacter. The health agency noted that most infections with campylobacteriosis stem from eating raw or undercooked poultry, unpasteurized dairy products, contaminated water and produce.

To find out where these puppies caught the bug in the first place, the CDC checked the dogs' food.

Thursday's study was published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, a journal produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Because animals are living creatures, disease will arise on occasion, he said. The owners of the authors of the document suggest to wash hands thoroughly with soap after contact with Pets. "Pet ownership is a tremendously positive thing in people's lives", he said.

"Antibiotics should only be used to treat illness, not to compensate for poor practices - whether it's trucking dogs long distances and having poor hygiene in the process along the way", Matthew Wellington, antibiotics program director for public interest advocate U.S. Public Interest Research Group, told STAT.
