Indonesian disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the quake also caused a tsunami to hit another city, Donggala.

The area was hit earlier Friday by a magnitude 6.1 quake that based on preliminary information killed one person, injured 10 and damaged dozens of houses.

JAKARTA, Indonesia-A tsunami wave up to 5 feet high hit parts of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi following a magnitude 7.4 natural disaster, knocking out an airport tower and causing other damage, Indonesian authorities said. Communications to the area were disrupted.

Indonesia geophysics agency says Sulawesi quake caused a tsunami. Earlier Friday, a 6.1 magnitude quake killed one person, injured several others and damaged dozens of homes, according to the AP.

The agency confirmed a tsunami had struck the province hours after videos of what appeared to be a tsunami hitting Palu Grand Mall and Baiturrahman Mosque had been circulating online.

The clip shows a large wall of water moving quickly before it slams into the shore and buildings on the shore.

The tsunami was triggered after a series of strong quakes, including a 7.4 magnitude one, jolted central parts of the country on Friday afternoon.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake-affected area popularly known as "the Pacific Ring of Fire".

Indonesia said the quake was 7.7.

In December 2004, a big magnitude 9.1 natural disaster hit off Sumatra in Indonesia, triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in several countries around the Indian Ocean.

Earlier in July and August, at least 557 people lost their lives and more than 400,000 were dislocated after four earthquakes of magnitude ranging between 6.3 - 6.9 hit Indonesia's Lombok island.
