FBI investigation into Kavanaugh is 'uncharted territory,' expert says

Republicans say the call for an FBI investigation is a transparent bid to continue delaying Kavanaugh's nomination.

Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, another top GOP backer of Kavanaugh, told reporters he thought an FBI investigation was "overkill" but that he was ok with the idea.

President Trump is one huge step closer to getting his guy, Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court - the Senate Judiciary Committee just voted 11-10 to recommend he be confirmed.

The outcome of the Flake-Coons deal was that Kavanaugh's path to Senate confirmation for a lifetime appointment to the nation's highest court will, at minimum, be delayed for a week as the Federal Bureau of Investigation looks into the accusations made against him.

McConnell had indicated that he would bring the nomination for a floor vote regardless of the committee vote.

"I do think we can have a short pause and make sure the FBI can investigate", Mr.

In his comments about Ford's testimony, Trump said, "certainly she was a very credible witness". After the women confronted Flake, several Democrats did walk out of the committee's hearing.

The world is still reeling from Christine Blasey Ford's powerful testimony at Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing for the U.S. Supreme Court, but the Senate Judiciary Committee is moving forward with the vote on his confirmation.

Both the White House and the Senate Judiciary Committee stressed that the investigation would be 'limited, ' and must be completed by next Friday.

Democrats had repeatedly demanded an FBI investigation since Ford's allegation surfaced a few weeks ago, and they hammered at the issue throughout Thursday's raucous Judiciary panel hearing where Ford and Kavanaugh testified.

Fox News host Chris Wallace warned that it would be a "big mistake" to disregard Christine Blasey Ford ahead of her Senate testimony on Thursday, citing recent conversations he's had with his own daughters. Flake earlier on Friday said he would vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation.

Midafternoon, the deal was announced and praised as a victory for Democrats, who had spent much of the previous day calling for an FBI investigation. Since she's come forward, two other women have accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct.

The vote, scheduled for 1:30 by Chairman Chuck Grassley, was held up when Flake -- known for his lukewarm support of Republican efforts -- was surrounded by Democrats in an adjoining room. "I was demanding a connection, demanding that he look at us, demanding that he give us real answers", she said.

However, Jeff Flake supported a vote to pass the nomination from the Judiciary Committee to the full Senate.

Flake said that after discussing the matter with fellow senators, he felt it "would be proper to delay the floor vote for up to but not more than one week". The spokesman said they were advised that Republican senators would have had to approve such a request, violating Ford's request that she not be named.

Coons of DE said that after Flake announced his support for Kavanaugh earlier Friday, they had a private conversation and Coons said he told Flake, "I respect you as my friend, but I'm having difficulty with your vote".
