GoFundMe says homeless veteran will receive money owed to him

What happened to the actual donations is now under a criminal investigation made public in dramatic fashion on Thursday when police executed a search warrant at the New Jersey home of Kate McClure and Mark D'Amico, the couple who launched the online plea for Bobbitt, a 35-year-old North Carolina native living under a motorway ramp who spent his last $US20 to help McClure when she ran out of fuel last year.

According to the Burlington County Times, police and detectives searched Kate McClure's and Mark D'Amico's Bordentown home early Thursday amid allegations that they misappropriated or mishandled money raised for Johnny Bobbitt, of Philadelphia.

The couple are being sued by Johnny Bobbitt, who got McClure gas late one night when she was stranded in Philadelphia. "They raised this money to help Johnny Bobbitt get money for food".

The couple claim they used their own money for the items.

The couple's attorney, Ernest Badway, did not return calls seeking comment on the police investigation. Both D'Amico and McClure have denied wrongdoing. In the suit, he says they used the account to "fund a lifestyle they could not otherwise afford".

Whithorne said the crowdfunding platform, which has reported raising more than $US5 billion from roughly 50 million donors since it was founded in 2010, was waiving part of its refund policy that could have prevented Bobbitt's donors from requesting reimbursements.

As for Bobbitt, the couple said he once burned through $25,000 they gave him in less than two weeks.

Their attorney has indicated the couple will claim their constitutional right not to have to testify.

Market sentiment was also curbed by a likely escalation in the Sino-U.S trade war. That's still a third less than the over 900 million at China Mobile.

"He's homeless and penniless", Promislo aid about Bobbitt in an interview with the Post last week.

Chris Fallon, Bobbitt's attorney, also didn't immediately respond Thursday to a request for comment.

But a dispute over the money has since arose.

During an appearance on Megyn Kelly's show on NBC last week, McClure and D'Amico insisted that $US150,000 remained of the money they had raised for Bobbitt.

The couple also bought Bobbitt a camper with some of the cash and parked it on land McClure's family owns in New Jersey. Video from ABC6 showed D'Amico outside the house golfing and playing with a dog while the search was conducted.

The campaign benefiting Bobbitt - which raised more than $US400,000 from roughly 14,000 people - began accepting donations in November, almost 10 months ago.

Bobbitt, who was in and out of rehab and is now back on the street, alleges he has only received about $75,000 and fears the rest of the money is gone, according to his lawyers.

Meanwhile, GoFundMe spokesman Bobby Whithorne said his company is collaborating with law enforcement in order to get Bobbitt back the money raised in his name, USA Today reports.
