Located north of Lakehead and about 10 miles away from Redding, the Delta Fire started about 1 p.m. Wednesday, burning bush and timber at a "critical rate of spread", Shasta-Trinity National Forest spokesman Joe Orosz said.

Caltrans has shut down a section of Interstate 5 in Northern California because of a large wildfire that broke out Wednesday afternoon.

State Route 108 was closed from the Alpine-Mono county line to USA 395, which was already shut down in the mountainous region about 200 miles (320 kilometers) east of Sacramento, the California Department of Transportation said.

Evacuation orders are in place for the Bootleg, Chris Flat and Sonora Bridge campgrounds. Unspecified structures were threatened in the Burchum Flats area east of Walker Canyon.
