Gunman kills five people in a series of shootings in California in US

Six people have been killed in linked shootings in the city of Bakersfield in California, police say.

Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood talks to the media in southeast Bakersfield, Calif., after authorities said a gunman killed multiple people Wednesday.

They learned that a husband and wife showed up at the trucking business to confront a man at the business.

The husband pulled his gun and then shot the man, police said.

Another person arrived on the scene and opened fire on the gunman.

When the deputy confronted him at gunpoint, the man shot himself in the chest, he added.

The man fled to nearby Breckenridge Road where he encountered two people before shooting them dead.

After carjacking a vehicle, the woman and child inside managed to escape.

Russians charged in poisoning say they visited United Kingdom as tourists
Skripal, a former Russian double agent, was poisoned along with his daughter in central Salisbury in March. In the men's first interview since they were named publicly they denied carrying women's perfume.

The suspect shot the man before turning the gun on his wife, Youngblood said.

Investigators are questioning around 30 witnesses in the case.

"Where we go from here is try to figure out why this started and why there are so many players involved in the connection, because obviously these are not random shootings", Youngblood said.

About 30 people witnessed the shootings and are being interviewed by deputies. The deputy who confronted the man was wearing a body camera.

- A series of shootings in Bakersfield have left six people dead and the suspect is among those fatalities, deputies say.

Youngblood said police recovered a pistol at the scene. "This is highly unusual", he said.

In all, five victims and one suspect are dead.
