Police in the United States have charged a homeless man with the murder of Celia Barquin Arozamena on Tuesday, a day after the Spanish amateur golfing champion was found dead on a golf course in Iowa.

In a statement on Twitter, ISU President Wendy Wintersteen called the golfer a "talented student-athlete and an acclaimed golfer with a bright future".

Cops were initially called after golfers located an unattended bag on the course. Officers then discovered the body "some distance away" from the bag, and they later determined that she was assaulted and later died.

While they investigated the scene Monday, police spoke with a man who knew Richards and asked them, "What did he do to her?"

"This was very odd and not right", Thornton said. "Right now, all leads are important".

Richards was later arrested. Records show he was arrested weeks later after he was found passed out near an Ames liquor store, telling police he took antidepressants before drinking alcohol. Details weren't provided, though WOI-TV reports Richards has a history of arrests for intimidation with a risky weapon, trespassing, and public intoxication dating back to 2015. After being stopped by employees, Richards allegedly told the workers that he would return and "shoot the place up".

Iowa State University said Barquin, a native of Puente San Miguel in Spain, was finishing a civil engineering degree.

"We are all devastated", Iowa State head women's golf coach Christie Martens said.

She was one of the most accomplished players in Cyclone golf history, the university said.

"This very nice young lady came up with her push cart and we all agreed that she should go in front of us", Thornton said. She was the third Iowa State women's golfer to compete in the U.S. Women's Open Championship.

The Dem Moines Register reports that Barquin Arozamena is the Iowa State leader in terms of squad average.

"Celia had an infectious smile, a bubbly personality and anyone fortunate enough to know her was blessed", Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said in a press release.

Barquin Arozamena won the Big 12 individual title this past spring in her final season with the Cyclones.

Investigators said the golf champion was stabbed in her upper torso, head and neck. The team was scheduled to face the University of California Davis in the finals on September. 18.
