US President Donald Trump landed in North Carolina on Thursday to inspect damage from Hurricane Florence, which ravaged the state and neighbouring SC over the weekend with high winds and torrential rain.

"Over the next couple of days, it's going to get rough in SC".

"America grieves for you, in our hearts, and prays for you", the president said.

The Little Pee Dee has crested in some regions at over 46ft (14m) and its flooding has impacted town water supplies, officials say. Classen said hog farmers draw down lagoon water levels during hurricane seasons, which allows the open pits to absorb heavy rains. Trump said 1.6 million meals have been provided in North Carolina and another 400,000 are ready for victims in SC.

Officials have identified the two mental health patients who drowned when a van they were riding in was swept away in SC flood waters.

More than 15,000 people remain in shelters and more than 200,000 customers are without power across North Carolina, six days after Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane, according to state officials.

The N.C. Department of Agriculture issued the livestock mortality totals Tuesday, as major flooding is continuing after the slow-moving storm's drenching rains.

Meanwhile, in Wilmington, residents are cautioned to stay in shelters as utility workers try to restore power to more than 300,000 homes.

In the Senate, the issue of whether, when and if Ford might testify has ignited a furor, especially among Democratic women. Aides plan follow-up sessions as needed to obtain additional information ahead of Monday's planned public hearing.

"Understand: There is a lot of water inland, and it is continuing to make its way downstream", county manager (in Wilmington, N.C.) Chris Coudreit said, according to the AP. At least 27 of the 37 Florence-related deaths happened in North Carolina.

The risk of environmental damage mounted, as human and animal waste was washed into the swirling floodwaters.

Trump said the federal government had been better prepared for this hurricane than any in history.

In addition, about 30 Sanderson farms that together house more than 6 million chickens around hard-hit Lumberton, North Carolina, remain isolated by floodwater and out of reach of feed trucks, Sanderson said, noting that the number of dead chickens could increase.

Trump, who has been criticized for his handling of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico past year, also thanked first responders for their work since Florence made landfall on Friday and recapped the efforts to get food to residents and restore power.

On Wednesday, thousands of evacuees were urged to stay away from their homes, rivers kept rising, and the threat of floods remained high in North and SC.

When Air Force One landed Wednesday morning in eastern North Carolina, the only visible sign of the damage wrought by Hurricane Florence nearly a week ago was a pile of twisted steel, the remains of a temporary hangar. He chatted and shook people's hands as he walked along a street strewn with trash, branches and sodden furniture, offering hugs and handshakes and posing for photos.

Thousands of rescues have taken place in the Carolinas.
