Hurricane Florence has weakened but will still be devastating

Dramatic Change In Path Projected As Cat 4 Hurricane Florence Closes In On Coast

Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm but it is still considered an extremely unsafe and life-threatening storm. Even though the storm has lost some of its punch, federal emergency officials warned there's much worse to come.

Weather Underground meteorology director Jeff Masters said Florence eventually could strike as a Category 1 with winds less than 100 miles per hour (160 kph), but that's still enough to cause at least $1 billion in damage.

"This one really scares me", Graham said.

When staffers realized a nearby Bojangles would stay open, NBC's Matt Bradley says, they opened back up.

At 11am (1500 GMT), Florence was over the Atlantic Ocean about 145 miles (230km) east-southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, and moving northwest at 10 mph (17 kph), the NHC said.

After Florence makes landfall, that ridge, now over Washington and NY, will move east - but be replaced by another one forming over the Great Lakes that will likely keep the storm stuck, McNoldy said.

"A slow westward to west-southwestward motion is expected Friday night and Saturday".

"They're very expensive pieces of machinery and high-tech aircraft that we do not want to have near any type of storms with high winds that could possibly damage that equipment", Feinstein says, adding that local airport authorities also don't want airplanes left at gates or on the tarmac when the hurricane hits, because they could add to damage and debris and hinder cleanup and recovery efforts.

Florence is forecast to move slowly over the Carolinas after making landfall Thursday night or Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A tornado watch was also in effect for parts of North Carolina.

Isha Renta, a meteorologist with the weather service's Baltimore/Washington forecast office, said there could be threats of isolated flooding where persistent storms and rain set up.

Starting with a Stewart 3-point play, Seattle countered with eight consecutive points and pulled away. When you're on the other side of it, you try to slow her down and obviously, we didn't get that done".

"Your time is running out", he said. Volvo is coordinating with parts suppliers so it will be ready to resume production, according to Datz, who said he wasn't sure how long the plant would be down. "Inland flooding kills a lot of people, unfortunately, and that's what we're about to see", he said.

This means the storm will have less of an impact in northern North Carolina and southern Virginia and more of an impact on southern North Carolina, South Carolina and northern Georgia.

The path of Hurricane Florence could affect the homes of more than 5 million people, and more than 1 million of them have been ordered to evacuate.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is foreboding in his assessment Hurricane Florence.

On the Outer Banks, some people are preparing to ride out the storm, despite an evacuation order. For the remainder of SC and North Carolina into southwest Virginia - 6 to 12 inches of rainfall is expected with isolated areas getting 15 inches.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic basin, Tropical Storm Isaac will strike the islands of the Lesser Antilles, with Guadeloupe, Dominica and Martinique under a tropical storm warning.

"Typically, we see a stimulus effect that creates jobs and raises incomes for South Carolinians", said Joseph Von Nessen, a research economist at the University of SC. "The power is going to go out".

The storm would be expected to die out by Wednesday, Ms Smith said. The team is following storm updates, reviewing hazards and historical flooding maps as well as getting familiarized with the area.

New Hanover County officials said Thursday morning that it could accept more residents seeking shelter at Trask Middle School, Eaton Elementary School, Codington Elementary School, the Johnson Pre-K Center and Noble Middle School.

"But I'm not afraid", he said.
