Hurricane Florence now a Category 3, but remains ‘extremely dangerous’

'Monster' Hurricane Florence Barrels Toward the Carolinas

"We will have enough crews in the Carolinas to restore power but restoration cannot begin until the storm has passed and our workers can safely access impacted communities". Even from a distance, Florence is expected to bring more sustained easterly winds to the region.

Despite all that, 65-year-old Liz Browning Fox plans to ride the storm out in the Outer Banks village of Buxton, North Carolina, despite a mandatory evacuation order.

"We've seen nor'easters and we've seen hurricanes before", Cooper said, "but this one is different".

Florence's intensity was forecast to fluctuate into Thursday and then slowly decrease.

The National Hurricane Center's projected track had Florence hovering off the southern North Carolina coast starting Thursday night before finally blowing ashore.

"Many of the people here have never seen a storm this strong". Maue says Harvey stalled longer and stayed closer to the coast, which enabled it to keep sucking moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Catastrophic flooding and destructive winds are becoming very likely in the eastern Carolinas. Isolated tornadoes are also not out of the question. You never know, but we know. Eight dogs and 18 cats from a shelter in Norfolk, Virginia, were sent to two shelters in Washington to make room for pets expected to be displaced by the hurricane.

Orrock said the high winds will increase the possibility of tidal flooding, with the worst coming during Friday afternoon's high tide. "Now the coast, all threats are on, but for the Charlotte area, the threat is increasing for flooding rain".

Based on the current forecast track, here is what to expect...

As it nears the coast, the storm's forward motion will slow to a crawl, but the winds and rain will continue full-strength.

September 15 (UPI) Tropical Storm Helene was expected to bring heavy rain, storm-force winds and large surf swells to the Azores this weekend, the National Hurricane Center said Saturday.

Helene is moving toward the north-northwest near 14 miles per hour, and a turn toward the north is expected later today. Tropical Storm Olivia is expected to move over Hawaii Wednesday or Thursday, KHNL reported.

Isaac is moving toward the west near 16 miles per hour and this general motion is expected to continue through the weekend.
