The Coopers were on a Thomas Cook holiday at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel in Hurghada last month when they fell ill.

Post-mortems on a couple who died while on holiday in Egypt have not found their cause of death, lawyers have said.

A Home Office pathologist began examining the bodies on Thursday.

The "inconclusive" post-mortems carried out in the United Kingdom will be followed up by further tests, according to the family's solicitors.

Dr Adeley said he had only a single document from the authorities in Egypt stating E.coli as a cause of death for the couple and explaining the odd smell in the room as a leak of pesticides from the adjacent, fumigated room.

The coroner said he would be requesting from the authorities in Egypt: forensic reports, laboratory tests, toxicology reports, microbiology reports, details on the air conditioning system, test results on food and water, details from the Egyptian atomic energy authority, histology samples, and the details of the police investigation.

"She is particularly grateful for the assistance of the media in helping to ensure that the issues remained firmly in the public eye, and has no doubt that this has played at least some part in ensuring that the Egyptian authorities understood that they would be held to account for any shortfalls in their investigations, which thus far have left much to be desired".

Their daughter Kelly Ormerod has said she has no faith in the Egyptian authorities' finding that E.coli bacteria killed her parents.

Adjourning the hearing to allow for further inquiries to be made and the results of United Kingdom post-mortem examinations to be analysed, he said he would be asking the Egyptian authorities to "disclose" all reports and paperwork that related to the case.

Opening the inquests yesterday, Dr James Adeley, senior coroner for Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen, said: "On the morning of Tuesday 21st August, Ms Ormerod became concerned because neither [of her parents] had appeared by 11am".

Thomas Cook's own tests identified a high level of E.coli at the hotel, which would "explain the raised level of illness reported among guests".

She returned to the five star hotel to discover her father John, 69, dead and her mother - a 63-year-old Thomas Cook employee - dying nearby.
