Celtics guard Jabari Bird to be arraigned on domestic violence charge

Boston Celtics second-year wing Jabari Bird was arrested last week after an alleged domestic violence incident that took place in Brighton.

Why was Jabari Bird arrested? The allegations revealed Thursday are no less harrowing.

Bird, a second-round pick out of California a year ago, has been accused of assaulting his girlfriend over a period of several hours and strangling her to the point where she lost consciousness.

Bird also is accused of throwing the victim against the wall of his apartment, kicking her repeatedly in the stomach after she regained consciousness and trapping her inside a bathroom. The victim then placed Bird on the bed and return to her dormitory.

Details of the horrifying accusations against Bird have emreged.

According to police, Bird choked his girlfriend with two hands at least once. She reportedly moved him to a bed and fled in a friend's auto.

The woman told police she was able to leave after Bird passed out with "seizure-like" symptoms.

Bird was transferred Saturday to an undisclosed hospital for what police have called an "evaluation" that continued until Thursday when it appeared doctors treating him had concluded he was sufficently healthy to appear in court.

Bird will be held on bail and be released under special conditions. "The Celtics organization deplores domestic violence of any kind, and we are deeply disturbed by the allegations against Jabari Bird", the team said.

The Celtics will be working with the league and local authorities in assisting the ongoing investigation.

'I'm taking some time away from the team as I deal with my legal and medical issues.

What is Bird's employment status with the Celtics? Last season he signed a one-year, two-way contract and spent most of the season with the team's G-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. His future is now uncertain.

Bird, wearing a navy blazer in the arraignment dock in in Brighton District Court, walked away from the building with his attorney, Brian Kelly, at 2:52 p.m. His next court date is set for October 25.

In a statement, the Celtics expressed sympathy towards the victim, and said they are helping authorities with the investigation.
