Despite the huge amount of money being given, it is far less than the philanthropy of other billionaires such as Microsoft's Bill Gates, who has donated tens of billions to his foundation, and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, who has pledged to donate 99% of his shares in the social media giant to an organization focused on public good.

Along with running Amazon the tech mogul owns space exploration company Blue Origin and the Washington Post newspaper.

Amazon chief Jeff Bezos is putting $2bn (£1.5bn) into a charitable fund he has established to help the homeless and set up a new network of schools.

Earlier this year Amazon played a pivotal role in diminishing and ultimately defeating a Seattle business tax to fund homelessness services and affordable housing. An Amazon.com Inc. spokeswoman said the $2 billion will all come from Bezos.

Despite his fortune, Bezos has not been a major philanthropic donor and Amazon has been criticized in its home of Seattle, Washington, for doing little to address problems of the growing homeless population. City leaders quickly rescinded the levy. The most notable involving more than $40 million USA to the local nonprofit FareStart - a hospitality training program and restaurant business that aims to combat homelessness and poverty - and Mary's Place, whose mission to find and provide shelter for every child.

"He's a pretty unbelievable neighbour, him and [his wife] MacKenzie", said Mary's Place director Marty Hartman. "We will build an organization to directly operate these schools", he added. How he would use that fortune for philanthropy has always been a point of discussion, especially after June 2017 when he solicited ideas on Twitter for ways he could make a difference. As per the current Giving Pledge signatory, Bezos is not participating. In January, Bezos also personally gave $33 million USA in college scholarships for young immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and each year Amazon partners with @ACCOrg to raise awareness of childhood cancer - second leading cause of death for kids in the US between ages 4 and 14.
