Jeremy Corbyn says Britain 'could well be looking towards a general election'

Jeremy Corbyn will back a second Brexit referendum if Labour members vote for one during this week's party conference.

Both leader Jeremy Corbyn and deputy Tom Watson announced to the media this weekend that they would be ready to "adhere to" any decision made at this week's party conference, saying the view of the party members must be respected.

The Labour leader said today that he would prefer forcing a general election this autumn instead of a second referendum but promised to "adhere to what members want".

Mr Corbyn told an eve-of-conference rally in Liverpool: "If this Government can't deliver, then I say to Theresa May: the best way to settle this is to have a general election".

Mr Corbyn declined to say which way he would vote in any new in-or-out poll, while pointing out he backed Remain in the 2016 referendum.

Labour is expected to discuss several motions on Brexit at its conference, and it remains unclear what the proposal on a second referendum might be - it could be a clear backing of a vote or something less black-and-white.

On Sunday, the campaign for a People's Vote said its supporters were pleased with "signs that the Labour leadership was listening to its membership".

May's Conservative Party criticised Corbyn for his move.

He acknowledged the debate "may be rumbustious" but said the chance of a general election would offer the opportunity to change the team carrying out the negotiations with Brussels, replacing Theresa May and her ministers.

He described the country as being at a tipping point and faced with a resurgence in the "radical right", adding: "This can not be a Labour Party that allows others to wreck our country and stand with the far right".

Many within the party support mandatory open selection contests for all MPs ahead of every election.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid is to propose that European Union citizens be waved through the border for more than two years after a no-deal Brexit, The Times says.

'Jeremy and I were elected in 2015 to give the Labour party back to its members.

"We're not ruling out a people's vote, but there's a real risk, and I think people need to take that into account when we're arguing for one".

Mr McDonnell said the form of such a question would be decided Parliament but it would "be about whether you accept the deal or not, or whether you send people back to negotiate a proper deal".

The rule change for future leadership contests does not alter the 10% threshold for the number of MPs' nominations which a candidate must gather to get on to the ballot paper, but also requires would-be leaders to secure nominations from 5% of constituency parties or 5% of members of trade unions or affiliated organisations.
