6 things to watch in Thursday’s hearing with Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford Brett Kavanaugh

Dr. Ford's testimony came in front of 11 Republican senators, all men, on the Senate Judiciary Committee who have pledged to push through a vote on Kavanaugh regardless of her claims while hiding behind an outside female prosecutor they hired to question her.

In an interview with Fox News on Monday, the Supreme Court nominee said that he never sexually assaulted anyone and was a virgin through high school and for "many years after".

At issue was whether the Democrats, who had first received Ford's allegations in an early July letter that she sent to her local congresswoman, had purposefully waited to make them public until after the initial confirmation hearings were over and the Senate was preparing to vote.

The allegations resonate deeply in Maryland, where Kavanaugh and Ford attended separate private prep schools.

It has become less clear that Republican leaders will be able to hold Republican senators behind President Donald Trump's nominee.

Women who come forward with sexual misconduct allegations are often portrayed as "crazy, vindictive, promiscuous or prudes", reactions that explain why many don't come forward sooner, Hill said.

Thursday, Kavanaugh is set to testify in a hearing that will also feature Christine Blasey Ford, a California professor who has said he sexually assaulted her while he was drunk at a party in their high school years.

Democrats have rallied strongly behind Ms Ford.

"Indelible in the hippocampus is the laughter, the uproarious laughter, between the two, and their having fun at my expense", Ford, a research psychologist, replied. "But ... I cant reconcile it with the person I've seen and heard".

The incident allegedly took place on a boat in the Newport harbor. But in a statement emailed to the Senate Judiciary Committee and later shared with Politico, Keyser's lawyer said she "has no recollection of ever being at a party or gathering" where Kavanaugh was present.

"I am nobody's pawn", she said.

Later, she told Senator Dick Durbin that her certainty was "100%". Republicans have hired Arizona sex crimes prosecutor Rachel Mitchell to ask questions on their behalf. In her opening statement on Thursday, Ford said, "Both Brett and Mark were drunkenly laughing during the attack". Those backing Ford said her case was emblematic of male dominance.

Under questioning from Mitchell, Ford said she didn't know how she got home that night.

Some of the senators who questioned her remain on the Senate Judiciary Committee, including Republican Utah Sen.

Democrats said they were only asking for an Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the matter - which could take as little as a week - and for other key witnesses, including a former friend of Kavanaugh who allegedly witnessed the assault, to answer questions.

Mr Kavanaugh and Ms Ford are the only witnesses invited to give evidence before the panel.
