Lack of a will complicates matters for Franklin heirs

During Aretha Franklin's funeral ceremony on Friday Ariana Grande performed

During Aretha Franklin's funeral ceremony on Friday Ariana Grande performed" A Natural Woman" and viewers were quick to point out how the cameraman kept focusing one particular guest Grande's ex Big Sean

Calls and an email to Greater Grace Temple were not immediately returned.

Smokey Robinson and Franklin grew up around the corner from each other.

"I know you're celebrating with your family and our neighborhood friends who are all gone". Knight in a statement clarified, the "same disease" meant that they both had cancer.

Judge Greg Mathis, one of Franklin's many friends who often talked politics with her, said that his last conversation with Franklin earlier this summer was about the ongoing water crisis in Flint, Michigan, where government negligence has left residents living with lead-tainted water since 2014. At the funeral, Hudson blazed through the song "Amazing Grace".

Franklin's assets include her estate, and she also maintained ownership of the songs she wrote, which doesn't include some of her most popular singles like "Respect", because it was written by Otis Redding.

"Nothing sounded better to me than the way my grandma sings", she said. "We don't all agree on everything but we agree on Aretha".

Some performers directly reflected that lifelong history that Aretha Franklin had with gospel. "It just didn't seem to be something she got around to".

The Queen of Soul was remembered during a almost eight-hour service that featured tributes from former U.S. President Bill Clinton and civil rights leaders, as well as often emotional performances by entertainers Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson and Gladys Knight. Author and Georgetown University professor Michael Eric Dyson said that her advocacy and support stretched over decades. She entertained for presidents, royalty and eulogized fallen icons such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

No backing down on Trump lawsuit - 8/31/2018 5:22:30 AM
Trump had on Twitter called the lawsuit a concoction by "sleazy New York Democrats", and pledged not to settle. Schneiderman resigned in May after being accused of physically abusing women, which he denied.

For African American women in particular, she was a role model and a benchmark for success, feminism and empowerment.

Aretha Franklin helped transform her community, and, through her music, she moved a much larger world.

See more in the video below. She even went personally to the downtown post office. On Friday, the Greater Grace Temple in Detroit embodied the spirit, the fierceness and the joy of Aretha Franklin. And as NPR's Anastasia Tsioulcas reports, the undercurrent to it all was music. He was accused of touching Ariana's breast while hugging her on stage, and also cracked what many dubbed to be an inappropriate joke at her expense.

"If Ariana Grande's dress makes anyone uncomfortable, I'd suggest you check that demon within yourself and not blame that young lady for YOUR perverted mind and or the perverted minds of others whom for whatever complicit reason you choose not to check instead", read one pro-Grande tweet. "Her voice made you feel something. He sang, "... for the rest of my life, gonna be thinking about you. "If Aretha can do it, I can do it too".

Almost eight hours later, after the oral tributes and celebratory songs, as the church emptied and fell silent and bright blue skies burned toward dusk, Franklin's casket was loaded again into the vintage hearse, heading for a private interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit. Aretha tapped into that tone and taught us its rhythm.

Franklin influenced generations of singers from the late Whitney Houston to Beyonce, with unforgettable hits including "Respect" (1967) and "I Say a Little Prayer" (1968).

TASHA COBBS LEONARD: (Singing) How I got over.

CHAKA KHAN: (Singing) I'm going up yonder, going up yonder, going up yonder. "She worked for us".
