John McCain, R-Ariz., leans over his flag-draped casket in the U.S. Capitol rotunda during a farewell ceremony, Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, in Washington.

The service for the statesman, former prisoner of war and two-time presidential candidate unfolded at North Phoenix Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona, after a motorcade bearing McCain's body made its way from the state Capitol past people waving American flags and campaign-style McCain signs.

His memorial website said that before his passing, Larson reserved four plots of land - for him, McCain and their spouses - near where they first met, at the U.S. Naval Academy's cemetery at Hospital Point, overlooking the Severn River.

Meghan McCain will speak at this service, and son Jimmy McCain will read a poem.

Following that, bipartisan leaders - McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Ryan and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi - presented wreaths.

"I know how hard it is to bury a child, Mrs. McCain", he continued, addressing John's 106-year-old mother, Roberta McCain.

House Speaker Paul Ryan called McCain "one of the bravest souls our nation has produced".

The Trump-McCain feud dated back to at least 2015, not long after Mr Trump kicked off his presidential campaign.

Friday started as a bright, sunny morning at the U.S. Capitol as the ceremony for late Arizona Sen.

He also recalled McCain as a man who could be cantankerous and stubborn but treated political opponents, including Democrats, with mutual respect while cherishing friendships struck up with those with whom he differed. Trump received five deferments that got him out of military service.

More recently, McCain accused Trump of kowtowing to Russian President Vladimir Putin at July's Helsinki summit, calling it "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory". Trump had faced criticism for failing to issue a laudatory statement about McCain after his death and waffling over whether to keep flags at half-staff days after McCain died.

"Graham remains alive and well, but after serving for two decades as Robin to McCain's Batman, Graham buried whatever remained of his own reputation for iconoclasm even before his partner's funeral", Milbank wrote in his column.

"Half a world away, wearing our nation's uniform, John McCain stood up for every value that this Capitol Building represents", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told the crowd of McCain's family, friends and aides.
