Photographs published online show the almost 1,000-foot web stretching across a beach, according to the Greek site NewsIt.

As reported by Daily Hellas, a broad area of greenery has been cloaked by the silvery spider-web produced by Tetragnatha spiders.

A giant web spanning 1,000ft has mysteriously appeared overnight in Aitoliko, a city in western Greece.

Giannis Giannakopoulos noticed the "veil of webs" earlier this week and captured the spider creations with his camera. They are often known as stretch spiders, as they have elongated bodies - and in another worrying development for those who fear spiders - Tetragnatha extensa are small enough and light enough to be able to run across water faster than they can move on land.

Though those with phobias may find the sudden presence frightening, experts say these spiders aren't risky to humans and were likely just taking advantage of favorable mating conditions. "The spiders will have their party and will soon die", added Maria.

Greek biologist Fotis Pergantis, president of the Messolonghi National Lagoon Park, said there's a simple explanation.

The tiny spiders don't pose a danger to area humans or plants, Chatzaki told NewsIt, though their rising numbers may be linked to an increase in mosquito populations. "They mate, they reproduce and provide a whole new generation".

Speaking to Greek news websites, molecular biologist Maria Chatzaki said that the spiders are not risky to humans and she not be feared.

Neither the gnats nor these spiders are risky to humans.
