Millman 'a little guilty' after shocking Federer

Novak Djokovic wary of Joao Sousa ahead of US Open round-of-16

Novak Djokovic wary of Joao Sousa ahead of US Open round-of-16

The 37-year-old Swiss - a five-time champion at Flushing Meadows - was beaten 3-6 7-5 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) by world number 55 John Millman.

Federer had set points in both the second and third sets, but troubles with his serve infected his entire game and 77 unforced errors doomed the 20-time Grand Slam champion in the face of a determined attack from Millman.

Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final, beating Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, tearfully admitting she was prepared to "break a leg" to win the match.

Federer, seeded second and on a presumed quarterfinal collision course with sixth-seeded Djokovic before the ouster, looked uncomfortable all night.

"When you feel like that, everything is off..."

"I'm probably in a little bit of disbelief", he said in a courtside interview.

"Roger had it on a string, he was manipulating me around the court".

Millman admitted to feeling overwhelmed at the start of his first fourth-round match at a Grand Slam. I've got a seven o'clock in the morning fantasy draft, so I have to get up for that and hopefully have a good draft.

My worst time? This is not even close, says beaten Sharapova
The Russian led their head-to-head series, 4-1, and hadn't lost to the Spaniard since 2014 in Montreal. Tsurenko, 29, had been on the brink of collapse due to heat exhaustion before seeing off Vondrousova.

The defeat also ended the former world number one's flawless record of 23 wins - 22 of them on Arthur Ashe Stadium - in night sessions at Flushing Meadows. I've played in the daytime, you know, at 120 (degrees Fahrenheit, 49 Celsius). I'm just glad, you know, I took the chance today'. But in previous matches gone by, not just with him, but back home in Brissy, I know there's a few Australian journalists here, I've always accounted myself pretty well.

Federer's defeat to Australian Millman marked the first time he has lost to a player ranked outside of the top 50 at the US Open. He comes from maybe one of the most humid places on earth, Brisbane.

"I think against Novak, he just has to bring it again, try to worry Novak, hope for another hot day, maybe".

Federer took the opening set courtesy of a break in Millman's first service game.

"I felt like a deer in the headlights to begin with, to be honest", he said.

"I've got to control the controllable and the one thing I can control is the fight in me". Nearly got to the point where I wanted him to start making shots like that, and I finally got it.

Millman is having the best year of his career having struggled with several injuries over the years, most seriously a shoulder problem in 2013.

"I would never have forgiven myself if I had lost that match", said a tearful Osaka.
