MP Leona Alleslev Leaves Liberal Caucus, Crosses Floor To Conservatives

Member of Parliament Leona Alleslev is crossing the floor of the House of Commons and leaving the Liberals to join the Opposition Conservatives.

"The government must be challenged openly and publicly, but for me to publicly criticized the government as a Liberal would undermine the government and according to my code of conduct, be dishonourable", Alleslev said in a speech in the House of Commons, announcing her departure from the Liberals.

A legislator from Canada's ruling Liberals unexpectedly defected to the main opposition party on Monday, dealing a blow to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a year before the next federal election.

Alleslev, who represents Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill in the House of Commons, made the stunning announcement September 17 as MPs returned to Ottawa following their summer break.

Tory Leader Andrew Scheer has announced that Alleslev, a retired captain with the Royal Canadian Air Force and former senior manager in the Department of National Defence, will serve as his shadow cabinet secretary for global security.

Canada bans use of trans fats in food products
The federal government first unveiled the trans fat ban past year , but gave the food industry until now to adapt to the changes. The ban specifically prohibits adding partially hydrogenated oils, or PHO's, to packaged foods and foods sold in restaurants.

Before physically walking across the floor where she was met by thunderous applause and handshakes, Alleslev said she was deeply concerned about the future of the country, citing economic and foreign policy concerns.

The Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill MP made the stunning announcement as MPs returned to Ottawa following their summer break.

The move comes two months after Ms. Alleslev played host to Mr. Trudeau in her riding on July 20, tweeting that "I'm proud to be part of this team as we head into 2019!"

"I think it's more of an indication that someone wanted to preserve her own seat", he said.
