Mueller will accept Trump's written responses as first step: source

President Trump's top personal lawyer said Tuesday that his legal team is still deciding whether to "accept the proposition" of responding to the special counsel's request for written answers regarding the Russian Federation investigation.

Heilemann pointed to Mueller's reported reaction to Dowd's warning, saying he understood, and said that did not mean Trump would not be called to testify before the special counsel.

The letter was the latest in lengthy negotiations between the sides about whether Trump will be interviewed by investigators.

A spokesman for Mueller's office declined to comment.

Rudy Giuliani in particular has been very outspoken about the ongoing discussions. In March, Mueller raised the prospect of subpoenaing Trump if he refused to be questioned voluntarily.

But others saw it as just another volley in a 10-month-long legal tussle. The team has argued that the executive has broad powers he is allowed to exercise without fear of prosecution and without risk of being subject to a grand jury investigation.

Scarborough said the president should be embarrassed that his own lawyers and staffers think he's too stupid to speak with Mueller without deepening his legal jeopardy. More recently he said he's starting to prep a rebuttal of Mueller's possible findings, while also acknowledging in a new profile that Trump could very well block the release of Mueller's findings.

Contrary to his lawyer's efforts, Trump has continued to insist to them and to aides that he wants to be questioned by Mueller.

"Republicans are trying to hide as much about Kavanaugh's record as they can because they know it would be damning", Meyers argued, showing Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) bang his gavel as 2010's Grassley, on split screen, demanded all documents relating to then-Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan and ample time to review them.
