Facebook announces security breach affecting 50 million accounts

Facebook announced Friday that a security breach had affected around 50 million of its users accounts. They plan to reset another 40 million accounts' access tokens too.

The breach was discovered by engineers with users whose accounts were affected set to be notified by Facebook. The company said that it discovered the breach earlier this week. The social network said it will continue to investigate and update the public.

According to Rosen, law enforcement has been notified and Facebook has reset the access tokens of the roughly 50 million accounts.

Rosen says the company has already fixed the vulnerability. "In this case, hackers were able to steal these tokens of almost 50 Million Facebook users (targets), which basically means the hacker could fool Facebook servers to believe they are the authorized users of the target's account that would give the attacker, complete access of the target's account".

"We haven't yet been able to determine if there was specific targeting" of particular accounts, Guy Rosen, Facebook's vice president of product management, said in a call with reporters. The company, however, still does not know who is responsible for the attack. Refresh your page to make sure you are seeing the most current information.

"It is why we have taken immediate action to secure these accounts and let users know what happened".

He said that as a result, around 90 million people would now have to log back into Facebook, or any of their apps that use Facebook Login.

Republicans were forced to go along in order to have the votes to move the process out of the committee and onto the Senate floor. Wright , who's now a freelance journalist, told Vice that she's concerned about Ramirez, Kavanaugh's other accuser.

Second, we have reset the access tokens of the nearly 50 million accounts we know were affected to protect their security.

In a blog post, the company says hackers exploited its "View As" feature, which lets people see what their profiles look like to someone else.

Those additional measures include logging almost 90 million users out of Facebook to "protect their security".

"You want to logout all activity and also want to change your password, and then you also want to clear your browser cookies and cache, and if possible set up two way authentication", said Bryan Ware.

Although 50 million accounts are believed to have been affected, a further 40 million have been utilised "View As" look-up in the a year ago, resulting in a total 90 million people that have to log back into their accounts across all devices.

Facebook is also turning off the View As feature until a security review is completed. Once these users do sign-in, they will receive a notification in their Facebook News Feed with an explanation about what occurred.
