New Zealand PM brings baby to UN assembly

Jacinda Ardern, 38, is only the second world leader to ever give birth while in the office. Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto was the first in 1990.

Ardern, who is breastfeeding and can not be away from her baby for extended periods, will be accompanied by her partner, Clarke Gayford, who acts as daughter Neve Te Aroha's full-time caregiver.

As she prepared for her first United Nations address on Thursday, she also had the daunting task of traveling halfway round the world with a baby.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern just brought her new baby Neve along to a United Nations meeting in NY. But Ardern seems to be handling it all like the legend she is.

Gayford posted a photo on Twitter earlier on Monday of Neve's security pass for the annual gathering of world leaders in NY this week.

He also joked about giving the Japanese delegation a fright when they walked into a meeting room in the middle of a nappy change. "Great yarn for her 21st", he wrote.

Because everyone on twitter's been asking to see Neve's United Nations id, staff here whipped one up.

A spokeperson for the UN told media the United Nations was delighted to see Neve in the General Assembly hall, saying Ms Ardern was showing that no one was better qualified to represent her country than a working mother.

Still, the United Nations was incredibly supportive of the First Baby of New Zealand's presence, with United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric saying the organisation was delighted to see Neve there.

However, Ardern said Gayford's tickets to NY and expenses would be paid for out of her own pocket, because there were few official spousal engagements Gayford would be required to attend, and most of his time would be taken up caring for Neve.

Ms Ardern was playing down Neve's appearance on the world stage. Earlier on Monday, she spoke at the launch of the annual "Climate Week" event. "She's a good sleeper and we don't know whether that will mean she ends up sleeping a lot in the day rather than the night". I have the ability to take my child to work.

NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern holds her daughter Neve after addressing the UN.

"Unless there is a culture that accepts that mothers and children are part of our workplaces, then we won't change anything".
