New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Her Baby Make History at UN Ardern is the first female head of state to attend the United Nations General Assembly with an infant child.

"On the one hand, women are expected to have babies and if they do not have babies they are condemned for it, and then women need to look after the babies, but they also need to be in the workforce to work", Ms Ali said. "He is the full-time caregiver", she said.

The impact of inaction regarding climate change is not an option, she said, highlighting the issues raised at the recent Pacific Island Leaders Forum.

At 38 Ardern is one of the youngest world leaders, and described this generation of young people as "borderless" and "global citizens" who are increasingly expressing "dissatisfaction" with current political systems. His first question was about recent viral reports that world leaders on the UN General Assembly floor laughed at U.S. president Donald Trump when he gave his address.

This morning Trump delivered his statement to the UN General Assembly which included a warning that there was no reprieve on the horizon when it came to his stance on trade.

Ardern appeared with her three-month-old daughter at the United Nations on Monday evening, and played with her before delivering a speech at the Nelson Mandela peace summit.

U.S. audiences seemed stunned at Ardern's relaxed attitude and amusing quips, and were surprised to hear she regularly stops to chat with voters while getting her groceries and even when buying maternity bras. The caption? "British Prime Minister David Cameron (R) laughs with an unidentified guest". Even so, Ardern told The New Zealand Herald that she doesn't expect taxpayers to pay for Gayford's travel while he cares for Neve.

And then on Thursday, Ardern removed Meka Whaitiri as minister of customs after the altercation. "That's all I'm going to say", she responded.

Ardern has been hailed as an inspiration to working mothers everywhere after she gave birth to her daughter in June.

"I used the opportunity today to talk on behalf of New Zealand, values that we have had for a long time".

At home Ardern has been praised for generating positive publicity for the country, but she will return to a population that is becoming increasingly sceptical about how much her coalition government has been able to achieve during its first year in office.

The U.S. has suggested it will forge a new NAFTA deal with just Mexico if it fails to reach an accord with its northern neighbor. One such attempted encounter led to a brief handshake, with Trump remaining seated when approached by the prime minister.
