The Times Higher Education World University Rankings shows the country's two leading institutions both rising and 103 establishments now represented, up from 89 past year. This year 86 countries are represented on the list along with universities from Iraq, Jamaica, Nepal, Tanzania and Kazakhstan for the first time.

IISc Bangalore has once again emerged as the topmost institution from India, show Times Higher Education rankings.

The University of Luxembourg, which achieved the 179th slot a year ago, was ranked as "unspecified " somewhere between 201st and 250th.

The Vice-Chancellor's vision to have The UWI recognised within the top five per cent of the best universities in the world has now been realised. Cambridge retained the second spot, while Stanford in the USA holds steady in third.

Mr Phil Baty, editorial director of the Times ranking, said that NUS remains "one of the most innovative and dynamic universities in the world".

"The nature of work is changing rapidly, and universities will need to innovate and evolve to effectively respond to the Fourth Industrial Revolution", he said.

Globally, Oxford University has topped the list because of its research volume and reputation, followed by Cambridge University and Stanford.

THE's World University Rankings is the only global university performance table to judge research-intensive universities across their core missions of teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income, and reputation), worldwide outlook (staff, students and research); citations (research influence); and industry income (knowledge transfer). Seven Chinese universities feature in the top 200 this year, with several gaining higher placement in the rankings. "Universities can't excel in isolation, they're objective built for collaboration - and it's one of the qualities that has so defined our world-class United Kingdom institutions", said Ellie Bothwell, Editor of the global rankings.

"While there are some examples of progress from Australia this year, the national picture is a cause for concern, with many universities declining or remaining stagnant", said global rankings editor Ellie Bothwell.
